The first mistake is thinking silence means empty space.

It does not.

Silence means the signal has not reached you yet. It means the station has not replied. It means the ship that carried the message may still be in transit, or lost, or deliberately quiet.

In Return Echo, the dark between stars is not empty.

It is waiting.
